The hikes in Madeira were truly magical, and this trip was made even more special thanks to João. His love for nature is evident in everything he does—from the way he speaks about the island and its environment to the appreciation he shows for every plant, rock, and landscape along the way. He genuinely cares about preserving these beautiful places and even takes the time to mark trails with other hikers in mind.
I felt very safe hiking with João. He is incredibly knowledgeable, not only about the local routes but about hiking in general. Throughout the trip, he shared valuable tips that I’ll continue to use on future adventures. He showed me so many different sides of Madeira—from breathtaking mountain views and dramatic ocean scenery to a beautiful waterfall that perfectly ended the afternoon. I can’t wait to return to Madeira, I will absolutely hike with João again in the future and highly recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic, meaningful, and unforgettable experience 🙂

Joao knows the paths we take very, very well since he is from this region, and he shares his knowledge and his passion for the mountains, so you can have complete confidence in him. João was absolutely incredible! He took us to unique spots and pushed us to do things we didn’t think possible. On top of that, he took us to local Madeira spots and even set us up with a local tattoo artist. Could not recommend him more. If you want a once in a lifetime experience where you reach heights you didn’t think possible, João is your guy. Through every moment of weakness or doubt, João pushed us to believe in ourselves and tailored the experience to our comfort. Don’t even get me started on the lengths he will go to ensure we have an authentic Madeira experience—calling ahead to a local meat spot and buying us pastries and wine. Felt incredible safe the entire time. We aim to plan future vacations around João because the experience was that incredible!

I had the best time in my life! Joao is the best, he is patient, knowledgeable, kind and crazy! If you are not afraid, you will see places which are breathtaking ✨️- I was scared of what will come but honestly, best decision ever! Do not book if you are comfy kind of person, you get wet, muddy, you will hike (not just getting there via car, take a pic and go) and you will work for those views!

PS: mountain boots/shoes are must!

WOW. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!! Not going to lie, I was hesitant to book this at first as a completely inexperienced hiker with a great fear of heights. I booked this with my boyfriend who is much more adventurous than me, however Joao was able to craft an experience that met both of our needs. He makes you feel super safe and comfortable and is sooo knowledgeable. You can really tell he has such a great passion for this island. The views were incredible and he took us to secret spots that were completely empty, making it feel like a private getaway. I cannot describe how much this experience went beyond my expectations. Joao gave us so many recommendations for the rest of our time in Madeira and even other trips we are planning in the future. He is absolutely amazing, even stopping in places we would casually mention wanting to see and really makes the experience whatever you want it to be. We felt like true locals! Joao is not just any tour guide he is a friend for life!!!!!!

Joao is amazing, I had a fantastic time and got to see so much of Madeira that I would’ve never found on my own! He’s a real joy to be around and I feel like I was smiling the whole day:)

He has so much knowledge of the island, the history, people, nature- you name it! Do bring a notebook or something because he has so many tips and suggestions that it gets difficult to keep track of them all!😃

What an incredible day we had with Joao in the Santana region of Madeira. Joao is passionate but life and his country and he is well respected by locals. From sunrise to waterfalls and two rainbows, beautiful scenery, family stories, levada walks and some delicious local specialties including lunch at Talho do Canico for a unique dining experience , we are so happy we took a leap of faith with this Heaven on Earth tour. Thank you Joao for an amazing day and the memories . Obrigada!

Hiking with João was the highlight of my trip to Madeira! His deep genuine love of nature, his passion for life and his adventurous, easygoing spirit made the experience extremely special. João knows the island inside out – he takes you to the most beautiful spots away from crowds and knows exactly where to be and when based on weather patterns to deliver a magical experience. He is also the kindest, most generous soul. I can’t wait to come back to Madeira to hike with João again. Madeira is an enchanting place – seeing it through João’s eyes takes it to a whole other level!

I would give this experience 6 stars if that were an option! João is not your ordinary tour guide—if you’re looking for an extraordinary adventure in the mountains of Madeira, he’s your guy. I’ve never met anyone with more love and passion for nature. He can be a little “crazy” at times (so definitely bring waterproof gear and wear proper hiking shoes!), and there will be moments when you think, “There’s no way I can do this.” But João is incredibly patient and supportive, making you feel safe every step of the way. This was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. If you want to experience the “real” Madeira, book with João!
