Join me for 10 incredible days of guided hikes and delicious food in the Azores Islands November 23 to December 2!
Below, I explain my plans for the trip:
Where are we going?
The planned itinerary (small changes may be made due to operational needs):
- São Miguel (Ponta Delgada):
- 22 November – arrive in Ponta Delgada.
- 23 November – visit the Sete Cidades lagoon, do a small hike and in the evening a restaurant/tapas bar crawl, including A Tasca.
- Flores:
- 24 November – travel to Flores and hike the Poço do Bacalhau trail, passing the spectacular Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro waterfall.
- 25 November – do the stunning PR1 Fajã Grande hike to Ponta Delgada.
- 26 November – visit the Fajã lagoon, Fajãzinha, the eco-tourism village of Aldeia da Cuada, and Fajã Grande.
- 27 November – wander around the beautiful capital of Santa Cruz das Flores and the seaside lava pools before heading to Corvo Island.
- Corvo
- 27 November – after arriving, take a walk through a historic village to find out about the island’s interesting past.
- 28 and 29 November – hike the PR1 Cara do Índio trail and watch a sunset in the huge volcanic crater.
- Terceira
- 30 November – travel to Terceira and visit its famous lava tubes.
- Pico
- 1 December – travel to Pico and experience its world-heritage-listed vineyard as well as a curated wine and cheese experience.
- 2 December – we will make our way up the Pico mountain starting at 1.30am to watch the sunrise from the top. Later that day, there will be time to go whale watching (optional).
- 3 December, we will return to São Miguel to end the tour.
What’s included?
- All guided hikes
- Accomodation on Flores, Corvo, Terceira and Pico islands (I can recommend places for you on São Miguel)
- Breakfast (cooked by me!)
- Transportation on/within islands
What’s not included?
- Flights/transport to and between islands (I will advise on the best dates/times to book for the itinerary)
- Restaurant/bar food (I will recommend the best restaurants I’ve been to on these islands)
- Drinks and snacks (I will advise what to take each day, depending on the hike we do)
- Third party experiences/tours (e.g. whale watching)
- Personal travel insurance (I am fully insured as a guide to run this experience, but you need your own travel insurance as well).
What should I bring?
- Two good quality rain jackets (yes, two!)
- Two pairs of hiking shoes – not hiking boots, they don’t work well for the Azores (please ask me for more info if you need it, it’s important you have the right shoes for this trip)
- Quick-dry tops/t-shirts and socks
- A headlamp
- Waterproof trousers
- Hiking poles recommended
